Single Use Technologies (SUT) still struggle on providing process robustness and predictability across scales. This lecture explains the benefits and potentials of using digital twins to allow for compensating bioprocess performance variations as for example caused by material variability or scale up effects. The role of AI in conjunction with digital twins will be discussed. We explain the possibility to counteract batch failure by predictive control strategies and deep integration of digital twins in a digital transformation program.
About the speaker
Herwig is a bioprocess engineer from RWTH Aachen and obtained a PhD in bioprocess identification at EPFL, Switzerland. From 2008 to 2023, he was full professor for biochemical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. In 2013 he founded the company Exputec, which is now part of Körber Pharma, pioneering data science software solutions for the biopharma life cycle. Here, Christoph currently also acts as senior scientific advisor for Körber Pharma.

Single-Use Event Basel 2026
Single-Use Event Basel 2026 is the ultimate networking event for professionals in bioprocessing, biotechnology and (bio)pharmaceutical manufacturing, with a focus on single use. Taking place on March 19, 2026, at Messe Basel, the event offers a full day of innovation, insights and interaction.
Meet exhibitors showcasing the latest solutions in single-use systems, bioprocessing technologies, and (bio)pharmaceutical production tools. From tubing systems and bioreactors to filtration units and smart monitoring solutions, the exhibition offers a hands-on look at what’s new and what’s next. Many companies will offer demos or product samples, and staff will be available to answer questions. The table-top setup ensures an open, accessible format where you can engage directly with technology suppliers and innovators throughout the day.
