The UNIQUE SKIN project is set to transform preclinical drug testing, tissue therapeutics, and other regenerative medicine applications by producing functional, multi-layered complex human skin tissue with hair follicles & sweat glands connected to biomarker biosensors that closely replicate human biology.
The initiative combines Ourobionics’ CHIMERA platform with with five biofabrication technologies including 3D Bio-Electrospraying, 3D Cell-Electrospining, & 3D Bio-Electrojetting advanced biomarker bioelectronic biosensor technology from partner CyboSense. SBMC will contribute by providing laboratory infrastructure, analytical support, and facilities for testing and scaling up the technology.
“By collaborating with SBMC, we’re taking a significant step toward industrializing smart, functional human tissue models that could redefine biomedical research, drug development & the creation of tissue therapeutics.” said John Zandbergen, CEO of Ourobionics. “Up to 90% of drugs tested on animals ultimately fail in human trials and we aim to solve that bottleneck of drug development with complex human tissue and biosensors. If the initial phase is successful, we plan to launch a second phase focused on integrating biosensors and conducting OECD-aligned validation studies.”
The collaboration between Ourobionics and SBMC reflects a shared commitment to reducing animal testing, improving patient outcomes, and strengthening Dutch leadership in regenerative medicine.
