Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB) have developed an automated process to produce chemically functionalized gelatin with consistent quality at scales ranging from grams to kilograms. By precisely controlling parameters such as temperature, pH, and reagent addition, the standardized process enables reproducible batches suitable for research and industrial applications.
The modified gelatin can be tailored to specific needs, including 3D bioprinting, diagnostics, drug delivery, and biomedical coatings. Different chemical modifications allow researchers to adjust properties such as cross-linking behavior, viscosity, solubility, and electrical charge.
The scalable manufacturing approach also supports the production of other bio-based polymers, including collagen, chitosan, hyaluronic acid, and inulin, providing industry and research partners with reliable materials for product development and feasibility studies.
